Kiama coastline and ocean on the NSW South Coast

Ocean views, coastal walks, the famous Kiama Blowhole, beautiful beaches and long, leisurely meals — here’s how to make the most of a two-night escape to Kiama on the NSW South Coast.

Just 90 minutes south of Sydney, Kiama feels a world away from the city. Here, the pace slows, the ocean is always close, and a weekend can be as active or as relaxed as you choose. Destination Kiama describes the town as a place where dramatic coastal scenery, village life, local food and a relaxed seaside lifestyle come together.

For a two-night stay, there’s no need to pack your itinerary with endless sightseeing. The beauty of Kiama is being able to combine a little exploring with plenty of time simply enjoying the coast.

Here’s how we’d spend a perfect weekend.

Friday afternoon — Arrive, unwind and let the weekend begin

The best way to start a Kiama weekend is to slow down.

Arrive in the afternoon, settle into your accommodation and resist the temptation to immediately head out again. Take some time to enjoy the ocean views, unpack, and let yourself transition into holiday mode.

At Coastal Indulgence, the ocean is quite literally part of the experience. With panoramic views across Loves Bay, your own private space and a peaceful coastal setting, it’s an ideal place to begin a weekend designed around relaxation.

As the afternoon light softens, take a stroll along the coast or simply enjoy a drink on the balcony and watch the changing colours across the water.

Then head into Kiama for dinner. The town has a relaxed café and restaurant scene, with local produce, coastal views and plenty of opportunities for a leisurely evening. Kiama’s food scene is one of the reasons Destination NSW highlights the town as more than simply a place to visit the Blowhole.

There’s no need for a late night.

Tomorrow is for exploring.

Saturday — Coast, cliffs and the Kiama Blowhole

After breakfast, make the Kiama Coast Walk the highlight of your morning.

The full coastal route stretches approximately 20 kilometres from the Minnamurra River to Werri Beach in Gerringong, passing through Kiama along the way. It can be completed in sections, making it particularly well suited to a weekend rather than something that needs to be tackled all at once.

For a two-night escape, choose the section that appeals to you rather than trying to conquer the entire walk.

The coastal scenery is the real star: dramatic headlands, rock formations, beaches and uninterrupted ocean views. The route also passes the Kiama Blowhole and Little Blowhole, making it easy to combine several of Kiama’s signature sights into one outing.

And if you’re visiting between May and November, keep your eyes on the ocean. Humpback whales make their seasonal migration along the NSW coast, and there are designated whale-watching platforms along the route.

Local tip: You don’t have to walk 20 kilometres to experience the best of the coast. Choose a section, take your time, stop for photographs and enjoy the views.

Late morning: Experience the Kiama Blowhole

No first weekend in Kiama would be complete without seeing the Kiama Blowhole.

Located at Blowhole Point, the famous blowhole can send seawater dramatically into the air when conditions are right. Visit NSW notes that the most impressive displays occur with a south-easterly swell, with water plumes recorded at heights of more than 30 metres.

But don’t simply arrive, take a photograph and leave.

Blowhole Point is a lovely place to linger. There’s the historic Kiama Lighthouse, the Pilot’s Cottage Museum, coastal views and the Blowhole Point Ocean Pool nearby.

For a slower weekend, this is exactly the kind of place where you can wander, stop for coffee and simply watch the ocean.

Afternoon: A long lunch and a little beach time

After your morning on the coast, give yourself permission to do very little.

Kiama has several beautiful beaches and ocean pools, ranging from surf beaches to calmer swimming spots. Visit NSW describes the wider Kiama region as stretching from Minnamurra to Gerroa, with a variety of beaches and ocean pools to explore.

Choose a beach, take a swim if conditions are suitable, or simply find somewhere comfortable to sit and watch the world go by.

Then enjoy a leisurely lunch or return to your accommodation for a quiet afternoon.

This is one of the advantages of staying for two nights rather than treating Kiama as a day trip: you don’t have to fit everything into a few hours.

Saturday evening — Dinner, ocean air and a sunset

By late afternoon, return to your accommodation and freshen up.

One of the pleasures of a coastal escape is that dinner doesn’t need to be the main event of the evening. Enjoy a relaxed meal, perhaps followed by a glass of wine overlooking the water.

Back at Coastal Indulgence, you can finish the day without having to get back in the car.

Just the sound of the ocean, the changing light and the feeling that you have nowhere else you need to be.

Sunday — Slow morning and discover a little more of Kiama

There’s no need to rush your final morning.

Enjoy breakfast and take one last look at the ocean before heading out to explore a little more of the Kiama area.

If you’re a market lover, check what’s happening during your stay. Kiama hosts regular markets and a range of events throughout the year, including the Kiama Farmers’ Market and Kiama Seaside Market.

Alternatively, wander through the town, browse the local shops and cafés, or take another short coastal walk.

For something further afield, the surrounding region offers plenty of possibilities, including Minnamurra Rainforest, Jamberoo, Gerringong and Gerroa.

But don’t feel obliged to see it all.

A good weekend in Kiama isn’t about ticking off a list.

It’s about having enough time to notice the things that make the South Coast special.

Before you leave — one last look at the ocean

Eventually, it’s time to head home.

But perhaps the best part of a two-night Kiama escape is that you don’t leave feeling as though you’ve spent the weekend rushing from one attraction to another.

You’ve walked beside the ocean.

You’ve watched the Blowhole.

You’ve perhaps spotted a whale.

You’ve had a long lunch, a swim, a good dinner and a quiet evening.

And you’ve discovered why Kiama has become such a popular South Coast getaway.

Sometimes the perfect weekend isn’t about doing more. It’s about having somewhere beautiful to slow down.

And that’s exactly what a two-night coastal escape in Kiama can offer.

A few practical tips for your Kiama weekend

  • Allow time for the Kiama Coast Walk rather than trying to complete the entire 20km route. It is divided into three sections, so you can choose the one that suits your weekend.

  • Whale season is generally May to November, so keep an eye on the ocean during coastal walks and from the area’s whale-watching vantage points.

  • Check the swell before visiting the Blowhole if you’re hoping to see a dramatic display.

  • Wear comfortable shoes for the coastal walk, carry water, sunscreen and a hat, and check weather conditions before setting out.

  • Most importantly, don’t over-plan your weekend. Kiama is at its best when you leave some time simply to enjoy it.
